Archiving old talk page contentEdit

  1. Make a new page called Talk:USER NAME/Archive 1 (so in your case Talk:ElectricRaichu/Archive 1).
  2. Copy-paste this message on top of the new page:
'''This is an archive of past discussions. Please do not edit the content of this page. If you wish to start a new discussion or revive an old one, please do so on [[User_talk:USER NAME|my current talk page]].'''

You can also write your own, but I prefer to just copy-paste it.
  3. Cut and paste the content from your talk page that you want removed into the new page.
  4. Put a link to the archive page on top of your talk page. I personally use this layout:
    <span class="toccolours" style="display:inline-block; margin:auto; font-size:115%; font-weight:bold; float:right;">Past conversations: [[Talk:USER NAME/Archive_1|1]]</span>.
  5. Publish both pages

TabberEdit

If you use source mode here's an explanation on how to add a tabber. A quick summary of the code would be:

<tabber>
NAME TAB 1 =
content here
|-|
NAME TAB 2 =

</tabber>

猿芝居Edit

Hello, I was wondering if you could look over a couple points on the translation for this song.

1) Would セリフ make more sense translated as something like "my lines," given the context?

2) Should 消した be translated as a different verb than 引いた in the second chorus?

Sorry to bother you if I'm just misunderstanding something simple. MeaningfulUsername (talk) 00:19, December 26, 2019 (UTC)

There is no in-fandom way to do so, but by using Copytables (a chrome extension) you can easily copy-paste it. I've copy-pased the translation below using it! Hopefully this helps. Amandelen (talk) 20:53, December 29, 2019 (UTC)

You had said
'I want to be alone'
While crying like a fool,
That's what you said

If I would leave you behind,
You would surely break
I'm only here by your side
So you will stay alive

I gather the thrown-away lights
And return them to your heart
And sew together the gaps between the stars
So don't you come falling down on me

I pile the flower petals
In order to catch you
How many times have my arms been broken?
If the soft strings of your heart
Were tied like misanga, we could've been happy

You had said
'I want us to be together'
While crying like a fool,
That's what you said

If I would leave you behind,
You would surely break
I'm only here by your side
So you will stay alive

I gather the lights you failed to find
And return them to your heart
And sew together the gaps between the stars
So I take care about falling down

Avoiding the flower petals,
I draw you closer to me
How many times has my body been shattered?
Even if the soft strings of your heart
Were cut, our wishes wouldn't come true

(Falling further)
My stretched-out hands grasp the skies
(Falling further)
My petrified legs face the sky as if kicking
(Where are you?)
Even though I hear your voice,
(Where are you?)
I can't see anyone
But I notice the string dangling about
"I've caught you,"

I say while falling down

Into the space between the flower petals,
the two of us come falling down.
How many times have our hearts been broken?
When our hands that finally linked let go,
It doesn't even matter if our wishes don't come true
As long as you're here right beside me

Re: CoversEdit

Hello,

It's fine, don't worry about it. I think changing it to total views is fine. However, making a separate page for the same song seems kind of redundant to me if the lyrics is the same. I think it'd be better to either make a cover section (like the Derivatives section of Vocaloid Wiki pages) with only covers over a certain viewcount, or mention the cover in the description of the song. Amandelen (talk) 22:36, January 20, 2020 (UTC)

Then we'll add a derivatives section. I'm currently incredibly busy but I'll try to get it done around february. I'll put it on my to-do list. Amandelen (talk) 15:18, January 23, 2020 (UTC)

Re: Official translationsEdit

Hello,

I agree with you, but I do think they should stay on the page even if they are of poor quality because the producer approved them. An approved translation can then be placed in the table later on if it is made. We can just make a template that mentions the translation is not up to par. Maybe something like: "While this translation has been approved of by the producer of the song, it does not meet the quality standards we normally subject translations too. If an alternate translation that does fit these standards has been found it will be added to the page as well."? Amandelen (talk) 10:43, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

I agree with using UnverifiedTranslation, sorry for not clarifying that. If it's Gibberish it should be fine not to host it. Amandelen (talk) 20:19, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

Mistranslated titleEdit

Hello,

This template has been bothering me for a while. I don't think that it's necessarily bad to have a template that corrects misinformation spread around in the fandom, but I don't like how it specifies who the (alleged) originator of the mistranslation is. I do not see the added value of pointing fingers, and there is always a possibility that the person mentioned did not even make the mistranslation in the first place (in which case we'd be falsely accusing them). I'm thinking of removing the last line of the template. Are you okay with that? Amandelen (talk) 14:49, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

I agree with Amandalen 100%; specifying the origin of a mistranslated title doesn't seem to be warranted, and it's certainly risky to do. It wasn't too long ago that I saw the page 監禁、調教、ビーフシチュー (Kankin, Choukyou, Beef Stew) had its English title listed as "Restraint, Torture, Beef Stew" ever since its creation. While this title seems quite inaccurate, the more appropriate title, "Confinement, Training, Beef Stew" was labeled incorrect, and for about nine months there was the mistranslated title template on the page blaming a translator for propagating what ended up being the better title all along. I think the wiki would benefit from removing that last line of the template. Violet330 (talk) 17:21, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

While it's impolite, I don't have a problem with pointing fingers if there is good justification for it. It is a problem, however, if we misidentify the creator of the mistranslation, or if the person we're criticizing has since improved their skills as sometimes happens.
I also have issues with the wording of the message. It comes across like a foreign speaker wrote the message. How about:
"This song has been known as XXX in Western fandom but YYY is a more accurate translation."
ElectricRaichu (talk) 19:57, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

That does sound a lot better. I've changed the wording of the template and removed the last line (from your wording I assume you're okay with that?). The name of the translator who made the mistranslated title is still on pages with the template, but it doesn't show up on the page anymore. Amandelen (talk) 20:25, January 27, 2020 (UTC)

Wolf/HoneyWorks TranslationEdit

I think Damesukekun's old translation is a bit off now that I see it. I thought a new translation would come in handy, because that song has a very dark atmosphere. I'd like you to check my translation , and reply with any mistakes you've found, and if very bad, revert it with the previous one.

Overall the new translation sounds better, but I think the old one is more accurate in a few places. I'll need to take a closer look. ElectricRaichu (talk) 23:24, January 30, 2020 (UTC)

Other Voice Synths categoriesEdit

Hello,

I have been thinking about adding an extra category to pages which use voice synthesizers other than VOCALOID. Similar to the Songs featuring Vocaloids category over on SynthV Lyrics Wiki, the category will specify which other voice synth has been used. I've already gathered most (if not all songs) for which these categories should be added, so we don't have to look them up. With the release of piapro studio getting closer, I'm hoping adding such categories will avoid confusion.

It's not necessarily related, but I plan on making an announcement once I finish the notable cover template with the changes we've recently discussed. That way all editors will know about it. Amandelen (talk) 15:30, February 3, 2020 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply! I was planning on making categories like "Songs featuring CeVIOs/CeVIO Voicebanks" or the like. That way you'll know what type of voice synthesizer has been used. Adding more than that (i.e. "Songs featuring Kasane Teto") would be more work and not really necessary I think, but if you disagree we can be more specific. Crypton Future Media has announced that they are making their own voice synthesizer software called Piapro Studio. They'll make piapro studio voicebanks for all their current vocaloids. This means that there'll be Hatsune Miku songs which feature the Piapro Studio version of her and not the vocaloid version. I'm expecting that there'll be quite a few pages added that contain only Piapro Studio voicebanks and no vocaloid voicebanks. I'm also pretty certain that there'll be songs which feature both Vocaloids and Piapro Studio, in which case the wrong category will likely be added. I'm hoping a category for songs featuring Piapro Studio voicebanks will prevent this.

Also unrelated again, but someone edited your translation (edits to the left). They've been editing more translations and I'm not entirely sure why. Are the edits any good?Amandelen (talk) 18:54, February 6, 2020 (UTC)

As of how they're planning on releasing it right now, Piapro Studio will be something different from VOCALOID entirely, much like UTAU is different from VOCALOID. I'm not proposing we'll differentiate based on which VOCALOID voicebank is used (which be so hard to do it'd be almost impossible), but based on whether the software used is piapro studio or VOCALOID, which given the demo shouldn't be hard to do. It's how we've treated other voicebank released on different softwares (Macne Nana's UTAU voicebank, IA's CeVIO voicebank, etc.), so it'd be weird to turn around and make an exception for Crypton VOCALOIDS imo. In case it's not clear whether piapro studio or VOCALOID is used we can just default to VOCALOID and move the page somewhere else if it turns out that piapro studio was used after all. Amandelen (talk) 11:59, February 7, 2020 (UTC)

The engine noises are different. In this demo I can hear it quite clearly, but it might be different when people tune it in other ways. I've made a Piapro Studio Lyrics Wiki in preparation for its release with a layout very similar to this wiki, so importing pages should be very easy. I might have been a bit hasty with creating it looking back now but oh well. Given its name only songs featuring Piapro Studio voicebanks (so as of right now none except the demo) should get a page there, so pages that are on the wiki right now should not get imported. I agree that it's annoying to search two wikis, which is why I made this template which should make it easier to navigate things. It's already in use here and here. If we decide to keep things separate I can easily make one for producers too (there are producers who use different voice synthesizers right now too, so I'll probably make one anyway). I think we should keep the two voicebanks separate because not doing so would be borderline misinformation. Yes, a song with Piapro Studio Miku would still be a song featuring Miku, but it would not be a song featuring Vocaloid Miku, and posting it here does imply it using Vocaloid. While we cannot disclose all cases, we can at least separate the ones where it's very clear the producer is using Piapro Studio instead of Vocaloid, and add a disclaimer to the ones where we're not sure. We could also additionally use more soft redirects to make navigation easier if we do decide to post them on different wikis. In case we decide not to use the different wiki we should at least have a different category to separate the two I think.

That aside, just to be sure, are you okay with adding a category for songs also using UTAU, Synth V, etc.? Amandelen (talk) 10:47, February 8, 2020 (UTC)

I think the categories will be useful to prevent future editors from adding for example the "IA original songs" category for songs featuring IA English. Looking for pages in multiple categories is possible with this tool. It's in the Navigation section on the main page (although not listed prominently). Maybe I can add it to the first message on the front page so it's more clearly visible?

While the product is a voice synthesizer, it should be quite different from VOCALOID. It's true that we can choose what songs to put on this wiki, but I do have some concerns regarding the situation. Namely, we can potentially spread misinformation because the implication is that songs on this wiki feature VOCALOID. While imho this is not really a problem if it isn't clear whether the song featuring piapro studio or VOCALOID (although a disclaimer should be added), it is when the producer has confirmed they are using piapro studio. Secondly, I want this wiki to be as consistent as possible regarding these categories so it's easier for newcomers to start working on here. Allowing confirmed piapro studio songs on here but not CeVIO IA songs is confusing to me, so I don't think an exception for Crypton VOCALOIDs should be made.

I don't really think we'll figure this out by ourselves. Maybe it's a good idea that I'll set up a poll regarding this in the post I'll make about guideline changes and such soon? Since this is a pretty big change I think the other editors would appreciate a discussion too.

I believe the VOCALOID voicebanks will still be available for some time to be honest. Piapro Studio Miku is planned to fully release in December (a demo will be available in March I think?), so at least until then I think they'll keep the VOCALOID voicebanks available. Porting Rin, Len, Luka, etc. will take some time too so those voicebanks will still be available for a while. Old copies of the voicebanks will always be available so it's not like there'll be no VOCALOID songs with Miku anymore after December. I'm not entirely sure if they'll keep selling the VOCALOID voicebanks after piapro studio has released, though. I can't really say whether I think piapro studio will be inferior. Piapro studio is moving towards less realism and more of a robot-y sound, and while it's not objectively bad I don't really like that decision. I'm also worried about how easy it will be to use the software given that E.V.E.C. was reportedly very hard to use. However, I don't really want to fully judge the software until it has been fully released in December, though. Amandelen (talk) 13:08, February 9, 2020 (UTC)

Translation Credits Edit

Hello Raichu! Linn from @poppochan28 | poppochan @ dreamwidth here!

Not too sure who to approach about this as I noticed two of my translations (Yuurei Tokyo, Shinu Toki Shineba Ii) have been uploaded and edited on the Wiki. I have a reposting policy stickied on my blog but was not contacted about both translations being used, so imagine my surprise to find them here! Can I check if there's a policy regarding this - eg. is it because I've used them for CC subs on Youtube that they've been reposted here?

Otherwise, I would definitely appreciate if the team could give me a heads-up before using my translations ^^; I'm delighted to have my translations approved for use on the Wiki but it did take me aback to find them here without my knowledge or permission.

I notice this has also caused a discrepancy in the translator credits for the two song pages and on Amandelen's masterlist. I would prefer my translation handle poppochan28 to be used instead of rielity; poppochan can remain for the external source credit.

Thank you!

Hi Raichu, thank you for the swift reply!

In response to your questions - yes, you may continue hosting the translations as they are now. Amandelen has added the restrictions template you have mentioned on both pages, which works for me and I hope it will be applied for any future translations that are used. For means of contact, my preferred way is via the email address listed on my blog; alternatively via Twitter DM to @poppochan28.

Thanks once more for the quick response and your understanding on this. I really appreciate it! The Wiki has played a crucial part of my years in the fandom and I'm happy that I'm able to contribute to it in some manner now. Do let me know if there's anything else you need clarification or assistance with.

Don't really talk to any other translators too often, maybe Migu39 or violet on here can check over it? I think SpicySweets is on here too but she might not check here as quick as yT

What is the best way to learn Japanese? Edit

Outside of finding good schools (none of the schools I have went to or am currently planning on going to teach the language from what I know), what are good ways to learn the language?

I know I've managed to pick up a few things (mostly single words [Example: "Ame" means "Rain") and simple phrases [Example: "Anata ga daikirai" means "I hate you"), but I still don't know much about the grammar or what all the words mean.

Where should I go/what should I look at?

(Also: Please don't give me an April Fools answer. I'm serious. also: I hate April Fools day so much... mainly because of stuff like that.)

Since you replied: Thank you! Hopefully I don’t end up procrastinating like an idiot XD
