The romaji transliteration sites below should NOT be used as a reliable source. Here are the typical mistakes they make.

  • Misreading of the particle は. は is usually pronounced as ha, but when used as a particle は is pronounced as wa.
  • Misreading of the particle へ. へ is usually pronounced as he, but when used as a particle へ is pronounced as e.
  • Rendaku (consonant change/vocalization). 顔 kao in 泣き顔 becomes nakigao, not nakikao.
  • Mispronunciation of kanji when a kanji has several ways of reading. 雪 in 粉雪 is konayuki and in 風雪 fuusetsu.
  • Irregular kanji reading. 五月雨 is pronounced as samidare, not gogatsu ame.
  • Unnecessary capital letters for katakana words. It's a grammatical rule to spell adopted words in katakana. For example, coffee becomes コーヒー and this common noun doesn't have to be in capital letters.
  • Words and phrases misreading.
    さくら さくら やよいの空は 見わたす限り かすみか雲か
sakura sakura yayoi no sora wa miwatasu kagiri kasumi ka kumo ka (correct reading)
sakura sakura ya yoino sora wa mi watasuka giri kasu mikakumo ka (example of misreading)
