Translation Notes[]

  1. About the mantra at the beginning and the middle - I did quite a bit of research at was able to determine that this is the traditionally chant of Dakini in Shingon Buddhism (Japanese esoteric Buddhism). As for the meaning, I found out that the words here are a corruption of Sanskrit words - for example, "on" in the song is the traditionally "om" sound that associates with meditation; om is said to contain the universe, as it encompasses all sounds, from the back of the throat to the lips. However, the Sanskrit and then corrupted here is not ordinary Sanskrit: "In the Vajrayana [Esoteric Buddhism]tradition, now preserved mainly in Tibetan lineages, it has long been recognized that certain important teachings are expressed in a form of secret symbolic language known as saṃdhyā-bhāṣā, 'Twilight Language'." (Bucknell, Roderick & Stuart-Fox, Martin (1986). The Twilight Language: Explorations in Buddhist Meditation and Symbolism) Aquatheories additional notes: Hri(h) means modesty, parivara means retinue, svaahaa means so be it and sabala means powerful (I'd translate it as mighty one). I am unfamiliar with Sanskrit grammar, and sounds hold religious effect and meaning in that language
  2. This is a poetic phrase literally meaning "At the ox's hour 3AM, where (even) grass and trees sleep (are still as if dead)." In the ox's hour, evil spirits are most active. Also, I removed Panda's note but it said that "shijima saite kakeru mmono" could mean "Someone who runs as silence tears them up". Unfortunately I lack the linguistic skills and English and Japanese skills to explain why I removed the note but I'll just say semantics. (Not (entirely) the reason i removed it, sorry Panda!)
  3. "Death agonies" is not actually connected to "the flesh and blood of the living." The Japanese is just sort of like "flesh and blood of living death moans. " So perhaps that's wrong, but it seemed most probable. Aquatheories's addition: Sometimes the と (and) particle is omitted, or ある (there is, to have), and the verb だ (to be) too in Japanese, and in songs they remove verbs from expressions and end them in を (object signifier)
  4. So /kokuu/ (void) is just a character away from the word /kokuuzou/, meaning "Akasagarbha, the Receptacle of Void," a Buddhist term. Dakini is literally sky dancer. Also panda, I removed your next translation note because of the context dependent nature of Japanese. It explained how bosom could mean pocket.
  5. "I'll eat up your life.." the use of certain Japanese words and sound changes such as 食らって → 喰らうて → 喰ろうて, the word やる and など makes this line have a spiteful connotation
  6. The word 阿鼻叫喚 was translated as what it originally meant, usually means "pandemonium" or "cries in agonizing pain" (Jisho doesn't have every word, and sometimes doesn't explain the word correctly/fully)
  7. There is no at or particles/verbs here and it makes the sentence extremely difficult to parse. Particles that can be omitted are だ (to be), and が (subject), は, (This sentence will need to be checked). This sentence can just be read as "Lotus pond, (idle) end (more likely place)/result (of idleness/unconditioned things) This line is so vague and requires extensive research, also lotuses mean rebirth
  8. in a poem written in the 1000s AD by Fujiwara no Mototoshi, in which the phrase "chigiri okishi" was translated "greatly promised." So I used "solemn promise" here.
