Japanese Romaji English
いたいけなモーション 振り切れるテンション itaike na moshon furikireru tenshon Innocent motion, tension breaking free
意外、意外 いけるものね igai, igai ikeru mono ne It works, it works, surprisingly well

ひとりぼっちの「ぼっち」を押すの hitoribocchi no "bocchi" o osu no I press the "on" of "alone"[1]
やめて、よしての妄想で yamete yoshite no mousou de With a delusion of reluctance

買えないものなどないのです kaenai mono nado nai no desu There’s nothing money can’t buy
転じて言えば何物にも tenjite ieba nani mono ni mo In other words, you can sell anything

尊徳の感情はないの sontoku no kanjou wa nai no There’s no honor or virtue in profit and loss[2]

ホンノリと少々 チラミセの本性 honnori to shoushou chiramise no honshou I let slip the tiniest glimpse of my true character
ズルい、ズルい可愛くない zurui, zurui kawaikunai It’s sly, it’s sly, and it’s not cute at all
それならばこうしよう ズルムケの本性 sore naraba kou shiyou zurumuke no honshou In that case I’ll try this, peeling back the skin of my true self
臭い、臭いはしたないわ kusai, kusai hashitanai wa It stinks, it stinks, and it’s shameful

間違い探しのペアルック machigai sagashi no pearukku Spot the differences in this matching pair
あれとこれとそれとどれ are to kore to sore to dore This one and that one and the other one and which one?

飽きたらガムを捨てるように akitara gamu o suteru you ni The reason I go looking for new love
新たな恋を探す道理 arata na koi o sagasu douri Like some people throw away gum when they get bored of it
パズルの凸凹意外にも pazuru no dekoboko igai ni mo Is that I’m not like a puzzle piece
誰とでもハマるようだ dare to demo hamaru you da I can fit with anyone

降りしきる雨の中 止まるべき錨を捨て furishikiru ame no naka tomaru beki ikari o sute In the pouring rain, I throw away the anchor that should stop me
人生は「コウカイ」という名の船旅だ jinsei wa "koukai" to iu na no funatabi da Life is a cruise called “Regret”[3]

遮るものをあげるならば saegiru mono o ageru naraba If I put out obstacles
心と道徳、法律か kokoro to doutoku, houritsu ka Morals and laws of the heart
お高い壁も遠回りを otakai kabe mo toomawari o There’s a way around even the highest walls
したならば ほら shita naraba hora So you can say “hey,
「こんにちは」 "konnichiwa" “Hello!”[4]

「アイ」とはなんぞと問われれば "ai" to wa nanzo to towarereba If you ask me what love is
それは「ワタシ」と答えようぞ sore wa "watashi" to kotaeyou zo I’ll answer “me”[5]
ひび割れしにくいだけなので、 hibi wareshi nikui dake na no de, Just because diamonds don’t crack
ダイヤなどいらないのです daiya nado iranai no desu Doesn’t mean I need any

Translation Notes

  1. The line is originally “I press the ‘bocchi’ of ‘hitoribocchi’,” where “bocchi” means “button” and “hitoribocchi” means “alone.” Thus, in the translation, it’s “on” as in “on button” and also as in “letters that appear in the word ‘alone’.” (I had previously translated this line as “Alone, I press the button,” because I didn’t want to even attempt the wordplay, but looking at this song again after not thinking about it for a long time, I had a brainwave.)
  2. “Sontoku” normally is written with characters meaning “profit and loss” but is here written with characters meaning “honor and virtue.”
  3. This is another pun–it’s “a funatabi called koukai,” where “funatabi” and “koukai” can both mean cruise or boat voyage, but “koukai” can also mean “regret.”
  4. The printed lyrics here feature various greetings in different languages, but what’s sung is only “konnichiwa.” The languages represented are, in order, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian (twice), Hindi (twice), Tamil, Hebrew, English, Persian, Turkish, Persian again, Armenian, Russian (twice), Greek (twice), Bulgarian (twice), and Italian (twice).
  5. Another pun, cross-lingual this time: “Ai” is Japanese for “love,” but also homophonous with the English “I”–so when asked what “ai/I” means, the singer would choose the “me” definition over the “love” definition.
