Description
"We are sheep, sheep, sheep." |
Lyrics
Japanese | Romaji | English |
メリーさん、君に恋した | merii-san, kimi ni koishita | Mary, we[1] are in love with you |
僕ら哀れな哀れなStray Sheep | bokura aware na aware na Stray Sheep | We, the sad, sad stray sheep |
下品な声を出しては | gehin na koe o dashite wa | We let out vulgar cries |
パンとブドウと救済なんて待っていた | pan to budou to kyuusai nante matte ita | And we wait for things like salvation and bread and grapes |
メリーさん、君を待ってた | merii-san, kimi o matteta | Mary, we were waiting for you |
死んだ目をして回したShepherd's Crook | shinda me o shite mawashita Shepherd's Crook | With dead eyes, you spin your shepherd’s crook |
塩・胡椒を振ってさ | shio koshou o futte sa | Carelessly shaking salt and pepper[2] |
いっそこの身を食べてほしいと言ったんだ | isso kono mi o tabete hoshii to itta nda | We say that we’d rather you eat our bodies |
誰も彼も | dare mo kare mo | Everyone |
どうせ、群れになって、名をなくして | douse, mure ni natte, na o nakushite | will gather into a flock, lose their name |
消える | kieru | and disappear |
迷々、僕ら迷い惑って | meimei, bokura mayoi madotte | We’re lost[3]--we’ve gone astray |
迷々、僕ら苦しんで | meimei, bokura kurushinde | We’re lost--we’re suffering |
迷々、僕ら悲しくなって | meimei, bokura kanashiku natte | We’re lost--we’re sad |
銘々、独りメェーメェー泣いて | meimei, hitori meee meee naite | Each of us, alone, we cry ‘baa baa’[4] |
メェーメェー、僕ら喚き散らして | meee meee, bokura wamekichirashite | Baa baa! About to go mad--[5] |
メェーメェー、どうかなりそうで | meee meee, douka narisou de | Baa baa! We rant and rave |
メェーメェー、僕はここにいるって | meee meee, boku wa koko ni iru tte | Baa baa! I’m here |
銘々、独りメェーメェー泣いて | meimei, hitori meee meee naite | Each of us, alone, we cry ‘baa baa’ |
一頭二頭三で迷々 | ittou nitou san de meimei | One sheep, two sheep, three and we’re lost |
四の五の言ってもロクでもねぇぜ | shinogono itte mo roku demo nee ze | Even if we whine about four and five things, it’s not even sa-six-factory[6] |
七転八倒九死に迷々 | shichitenbattou kyuushi ni meimei | Fall down seven times, get up eight and die nine, we’re lost |
トウ然、そのままサヨナラベイベー | touzen, sono mama sayonara beibee | Cer-ten-ly, we’ll leave it like that and bid farewell, baby[7] |
我等はひつじ、ひつじ、ひつじ | warera wa hitsuji, hitsuji, hitsuji | We are all sheep, sheep, sheep |
愚かなひつじ | oroka na hitsuji | Foolish sheep |
みんなでメェメェメェ | minna de mee mee mee | Everyone cries ‘baa, baa, baa!’ |

Translation Notes
- ↑ The song is implied to be in multiple first person perspective, so I’m sticking with that for the rest of the song (where applicable).
- ↑ You know what would’ve been smart? Trying to interpret this part as to whether ‘Mary’ or the speaker(s) is/are shaking the salt and pepper. What did I do? Leave it as vague as the song did (imo it’d be fitting for Mary to be doing it but the sentence structure implies that it’s the sheep/speakers).
- ↑ A title drop. It’s wordplay with ‘mee mee’ (bleating’ and ‘meimei’ (individually). The one in the title is the word (‘mei’) for lost repeated, so something like ‘Lost Lost’. Changed all instances of it in the lyrics to ‘we’re lost’ so it makes some sense in English.
- ↑ The original song uses ‘meh meh’ (or ‘maa maa’ as in the beginning of the video), but it’s not a very common interpretation of a sheep’s cry in English.
- ↑ ...Don’t take my word for this. I tried to search up what ‘どうかなりそう’ meant, but all I got was for ‘どうにかなりそう’ and one site for the term I was actually looking for. It has the general meaning of ‘skittish’ and ‘going mad but not completely off the rails yet’.
(どうかなりそうで is a difficult one, but I agree "about to go mad" (from どうかしている) seems plausible. The purpose of で is to make it into a clause and link it with the rest of the verse. verb+そう is a "na" adjective whose -te form is made by adding で, exactly the same as the て at the end of the other lines in the verse. - ElectricRaichu) - ↑ Following the structure it literally means, ‘Called for four and five, but there ain’t six’. However, if we follow the ‘touzen’ pun below, then ‘roku’ in ‘roku demo nee ze’ is a pun, and the latter means ‘satisfactory’ (in a negative context). So ‘not even sa-six-factory’. Terrible, but I can’t think of anything else.
- ↑ ‘Touzen’ means ‘Of course’, but Karasuyasabou intentionally wrote ‘tou’ in katakana to keep up with the counting theme--’tou’ or ‘too’ means ‘ten’, and certainly works as an alternative to ‘of course’, so ‘certainly’ → cer-ten-ly. I’m proud of that one.
- ↑ The line is actually, ‘I’m begging you to save me, please’ and cut midway with the bleating, but the original lyrics put ‘you’ at the end of the stanza for dramatic effect. So I tried to cut the sentence in a similar way to reflect that.
