Translation Notes
This song is told from the perspective of 潘金蓮 Pan Jinlian, a major character in 金瓶梅 Jin Ping Mei, a classic 17th century Chinese novel based on the older classic 水滸傳 Water Margin. While Jinlian and her second husband, 西門慶 Ximen Qing, are minor characters in Water Margin, their sexual debauchery and its tragic consequences are detailed in Jin Ping Mei.
- ↑ While the on-screen lyrics say 嫵媚風流 wǔmèi fēngliú, Tinayi sings 風流嫵媚 fēngliú wǔmèi.
- ↑ A line from both Water Margin and Jin Ping Mei describing 武大郎 Wu Dalang, Pan Jinlian's first husband. 尺 and 寸 are both traditional Chinese units, close to feet and inches. While "three inches" seem to clearly be a euphemism, especially since the previous line just called him five feet tall, the paragraph from Chapter 1 in Jin Ping Mei where it appears explains that 俗語言其身上粗糙,頭臉窄狹故也 "it's a vulgar way of saying his skin is coarse and his face is narrow." It's likely this was meant to be a double or triple entendre and the exact meaning left to the imagination.

The original is 輕攏慢撚抹復挑, where 捻 and 撚 are alternate forms of the same character, and describes the physical playing of the pipa. Given all the implicit and explicit references to sex in this verse, it's likely the singer isn't actually playing the pipa.

The pouring might be a reference to pouring a candle in a mold, or the candle itself might be the euphemism. As for boat, it may be a euphemism based on punting, where a long pole was pushed against the bottom of the river. This was the means of propulsion for many boats in China, especially riverboats. Alternatively, they may both be names of sex positions.
- ↑ An alteration of the phrase 魚水之歡, which uses thrashing fish to symbolize sex, although this image goes back to the Classic of Poetry. In 宋玉 Song Yu's "The Rhapsody of Gaotang" 高唐赋, an unnamed King of Chu encounters the Goddess of the Wu Mountains. This has been taken by later ancient Chinese writers as a sexual encounter, and the story has become synonymous with sex.

In both plays, the line is spoken by a male lover to a female lover, which this song inverts.
