Description
"I long for the night, and I long for the sensitive, delicate loneliness that can only belong to the night. Thus, have I become – “a flower that lives by night and dies by day”." |

Chinese | Pinyin | English |
真与假 对与错 | zhēn yǔ jiǎ duì yǔ cuò | True and false, right and wrong, |
一切都黯然失色 | yīqiè dōu ànrán shīsè | Have all found themselves paled into insignificance |
漆黑与浑浊中 | qīhēi yǔ húnzhuó zhōng | Here, in the dark and muddled, |
能否打捞清澈 | néng fǒu dǎlāo qīngchè | Can I regain even a tiny moment of calm and lucidity? |
沉睡的被称作 | chénshuì de bèi chēng zuò | Deep in sleep, they've instead been referred to as |
光的追随者 | guāng de zhuīsuízhě | Those who seek in pursuit of light and glory |
在苏醒的下一个 | zài sūxǐng de xià yī gè | Once they've woken up, I wonder, |
故事里起承转合 | gùshì lǐ qǐchéngzhuǎnhé | How will the next story go? |
规整的 散乱的 | guīzhěng de sàn luàn de | Whether put well in order or in a proper mess, |
时间被沙漏折射 | shíjiān bèi shālòu zhéshè | All the same, time is being refracted by the falling sand (of the hourglass) |
哭泣的城市 | kūqì de chéngshì | The city, sobbing with tears, |
倒映破碎的漩涡 | dàoyìng pòsuì de xuánwō | Is reflected onto the broken maelstrom |
借零点一刻 | jiè líng diǎn yī kè | Under a short moment at midnight, |
指针车辙碾过 | zhǐzhēn chēzhé niǎnguò | The hand of the clock wounds over its well-trodden tracks |
怀着哀悼叹息 | huáizhe āidào tànxí | With grief and regret, I sigh |
黎明到来 无法选择 | límíng dàolái wúfǎ xuǎnzé | The dawn has come, without my choice in the matter |
吞咽歌声 留下喑哑 | tūnyàn gēshēng liú xià yīnyǎ | Swallowing my proud voice, I leave myself mute and silent |
枯萎的想法 | kūwěi de xiǎngfǎ | Withered thoughts and ideas |
提线木偶不知害怕 | tí xiàn mù'ǒu bùzhī hàipà | What would a puppet on strings know about fear? |
天亮后停止发芽 | tiānliàng hòu tíngzhǐ fāyá | As the sun rises, the bud stops growing |
你是否会融化于无尽盛夏 | nǐ shìfǒu huì rónghuà yú wújìn shèngxià | Would you someday disappear in the endless midsummer? |
孤傲和孤独从来无人应答 | gū'ào hé gūdú cónglái wúrén yìngdá | Putting on a brave front, in loneliness, there was never someone who answered |
寄生在 凋谢在 暮色的 无名花 | jìshēng zài diāoxiè zài mùsè de wúmíng huā | A parasitic living thing, the unknown flower that wilts when dusk comes |
苦与甜渗入白昼变得复杂 | kǔ yǔ tián shènrù báizhòu biàn dé fùzá | Both bitter and sweet things have set into the midday, as they stir mixed feelings in me |
明与暗 相交错 | míng yǔ àn xiàng jiāocuò | Light and dark intertwine |
夜幕被流星划破 | yèmù bèi liúxīng huà pò | Shooting stars streak across the night skies |
翻涌的冷漠中 | fānyǒng de lěngmò zhōng | While putting on a cold front, with aggravated emotions stirring within, |
窥见一隙炽热 | kuījiàn yī xì chìrè | I catch a glimpse of passion slipping through |
蛰伏着躲藏于 | zhéfúzhe duǒcáng yú | Hibernating, I hide myself in |
陌生的沼泽 | mòshēng de zhǎozé | The swamp that is as far from home to me |
在佩戴假面以前 | zài pèidài jiǎ miàn yǐqián | Before I take up this mask, |
构思好如何言说 | gòusī hǎo rúhé yánshuō | I'd like to think long and hard how to say these words |
无数个你 | wúshù gè nǐ | Countless 'you's |
丢失了无数个我 | diū shī le wúshù gè wǒ | Have cast countless 'me's aside |
可是无数天空 | kěshì wúshù tiānkōng | On the other hand, you'll also find |
游荡着那些你我 | yóudàngzhe nàxiē nǐwǒ | That there are a few 'you and me's lingering over countless skies |
写一支凄凉的歌 | xiě yī zhī qīliáng de gē | I'll write a dreary piece, a sad song |
破晓以前将迷茫烧灼 | pòxiǎo yǐqián jiāng mímáng shāozhuó | Before the dawn comes, it shall burn through my confusion and doubts |
黎明到来 无法选择 | límíng dàolái wúfǎ xuǎnzé | But the dawn has come, without my choice in the matter |
苦与甜渗入白昼变得复杂 | kǔ yǔ tián shènrù báizhòu biàn dé fùzá | Both bitter and sweet things have set into the midday, as they stir mixed feelings in me |
你是否会驻足于无尽盛夏 | nǐ shìfǒu huì zhùzú yú wújìn shèngxià | Will you someday settle down in the endless midsummer? |
渴望拥抱亲吻和抚摸头发 | kěwàng yǒngbào qīnwěn hé fǔmō tóufà | Oh, how I long for someone to hold me tight, kiss me, and stroke my hair |
爱与恨 悲与喜 淹没的 无名花 | ài yǔ hèn bēi yǔ xǐ yānmò de wúmíng huā | Love and hate, sorrow and joy, the unknown flower that drowns to oblivion |
或许只是一阵凝固的喧哗 | huòxǔ zhǐshì yīzhèn nínggù de xuānhuá | Perhaps, I'm doing nothing more than trying to freeze the city noise and hubbub for a short moment |

Translation Notes
- ↑ The title, 朝死暮生, is an inverted version of the Chinese idiom 朝生暮死, the latter expression which means “(like mayflies whose lives start at day and end by dusk) to be ephemeral”. When inverted, 朝死暮生 literally means “to die at the start of the day, but to start living as the dusk sets”.
