Japanese Romaji English
「何十回目の夜だろう」 "nanjuukaime no yoru darou" “How many dozens of nights has it been?”
少年、目を輝かせるその先には、 shounen, me o kagayakaseru sono saki ni wa, Beyond the boy’s sparkling eyes,
僕らを見下した月 bokura o mikudashita tsuki was the moon looking down at us
「何度でも叫ぶつもりさ、 "nando demo sakebu tsumorisa, “I plan on shouting it out time and time again!
スーパーマシンを作った暁にはキミと共へ、 suupaa mashin o tsukutta akatsuki ni wa kimi to tomo e, When dawn comes on the morning when I finish making my super machine,
月へ行こう」 tsuki e yukou" together we’ll go to the moon!”

「回れ廻れ時のよう、 "maware maware toki no you, “Go round and round, like time itself,
止まることを知れず永遠と何回もその顔を見せてくれ」 tomaru koto o shirezu eien to nankai mo sono kao o misetekure" without knowing one day it’ll all come to a stop, for eternity time and time again show me that face of yours.”
「光れ光れ、 "hikare hikare, “Shine, be bright,
僕らだけを照らす星となれ」 bokura dake o terasu hoshi to nare" become a star illuminating us alone”

君を目指した盲目少年は kimi o mezashita moumoku shounen wa This blind[2] boy with his sights set on you,
喜怒哀楽を何度も繰り返す kidoairaku o nando mo kurikaesu cycles through the emotions again and again.
うつ伏せになったいつもの日曜日 utsubuse ni natta itsumo no nichiyoubi The usual Sunday, lying face in the ground,
明日を片手に今日を終える asu o katate ni kyou o oeru finishing today with yesterday in one hand.

「何千回目の夜だろう」 "nansenkaime no yoru darou" “How many thousands of nights has it been?”
少年、目をうつむかせるその先には、 shounen, me o utsumukaseru sono saki ni wa , In everything beyond the boy’s downturned eyes,
すでにあの娘はいなくて sude ni ano ko wa inakute that girl is nowhere to be seen
思いが薄れる節目に噂の波が町に流れ始める、 omoi ga usureru fushime ni uwasa no nami ga machi ni nagarehajimeru, At the turning point when his feelings started to dim, a rumor washed across the town,
願い叶う月の話 negai kanau tsuki no hanashi of a moon that could grant your wishes.

走りかける風の様、 hashirikakeru kaze no you, Running off like the wind,
止まることも知れず坦々と、 tomaru koto mo shirezu tantan to, without knowing one day it’ll all come to a stop
何回も理想を浮かべながら nankai mo risou o ukabenagara while peacefully time and time again picturing his dream
「光り光る、 "hikari hikaru, “Light shining down,
僕らだけしかいない星にしよう」 bokura dake shika inai hoshi ni shiyou" I’ll turn this into a star only I live on”

君を目指した盲目少年は kimi o mezashita moumoku shounen wa The blind boy with his sights set on you,
喜怒哀楽を何度も繰り返す kidoairaku o nando mo kurikaesu cycles through the emotions again and again.
あお向けになった変わった金曜日 aomuke ni natta kawatta kin'youbi A peculiar Friday, facing upwards,
明日を片手に今日を刻む asu o katate ni kyou o kizamu carving down today with yesterday in one hand.

君を目指し頑張ったはずだった kimi o mezashi ganbatta hazu datta I worked hard with my sights set on you, or so I thought...
すべてをこの望の為につぎ込んだ subete o kono nozomi no tame ni tsugikonda I had invested everything for the sake of this dream,
広がった地表でただ一人 hirogatta chihyou de tada hitori Alone on the surface as it spread out before me,
僕は何を思う? boku wa nani o omou? what did I think…?

突然周りが光り出したんだ totsuzen mawari ga hikaridashitan da Suddenly my surroundings shone with light,
見たことない光景が目の前に mita koto nai koukei ga me no mae ni I sight I’d never seen before right in front of my eyes,
あの娘が褒めてくれたような気がしてさ ano ko ga hometekureta you na ki ga shite sa I felt as though she had praised me,
明日もなんか頑張れそうだ ashita mo nanka ganbaresou da I think tomorrow I’ll be able put in my all.

Translation Notes[]

  1. The official title is Lunar World Travel but 月世界旅行 also seems to be the Japanese title for the movie A Trip to the Moon. Apart from the travelling to the moon thing, they don’t seem to have much in common.
  2. ”Blind” isn’t supposed to be taken literally, it’s in the “lacking perception, awareness, or judgement.” sense of the word, I think it plays into ‘setting his sights’ (which also is supposed to imply “aiming for” / “aiming to go to”
