Japanese Romaji English
夕立が降り始めた yuudachi ga furihajimeta In the evening, it started to rain;
雨宿りは慣れたもんだった amayadori wa nareta mon datta I’d gotten used to having to stay inside
誰もいないここ以外の dare mo inai koko igai no My thoughts flew to another world than this one,
別世界に思いを馳せて bessekai ni omoi o hasete with no people in it

避けていたクラスメイト sakete ita kurasumeito The classmate I’d avoided
彼女か何かできたようで kanojo ka nani ka dekita you de seemed to have gotten a girlfriend or something
はにかんだ視線の先には hanikanda shisen no saki ni wa I followed his shy gaze
お化粧が眩しい顔があった okeshou ga mabushii kao ga atta to her beautifully made-up face

今年は、梅雨が遅いようだ。 kotoshi wa, tsuyu ga osoi you da. This year, rainy season seems to be coming late.
サイダーがはじけた夏の日 saidaa ga hajiketa natsu no hi Soda bubbles pop on a summer day[1]

今はまだ 今はまだ さよならなんて ima wa mada ima wa mada sayonara nante I’m not ready yet, I’m not ready yet
言わないよ 言えないよ こぼれ落ちていく夏 iwanai yo ienai yo koboreochite iku natsu I won’t say goodbye, I can’t say goodbye; summer is scattering to the winds
すきなこと すきなこと できたらいいけど。 suki na koto suki na koto dekitara ii kedo. I wish I could’ve done what I wanted to do, what I wanted to do.
「苦しいよ」って言いたいけれど "kurushii yo" tte iitai keredo I wanted to say “It hurts,” but
うつむく君を遠くで眺めるだけでした utsumuku kimi o tooku de nagameru dake deshita I could only watch you from afar as you hung your head

めずらしく風邪をひいた mezurashiku kaze o hiita I caught the flu, though I don’t often;
目の玉の奥がねじるような menotama no oku ga nejiru you na it felt like my eyeballs were being twisted
久しぶりの感覚が hisashiburi no kankaku ga The sensation I hadn’t felt in a long time
布団の中の僕を襲う夜だ futon no naka no boku o osou yoru da attacked me as I lay on my futon

今年は、熱が下がらないな。 kotoshi wa, netsu ga sagaranai na. This year, my fever won’t go down.
サイダーがこぼれた夏の日 saidaa ga koboreta natsu no hi Soda spilled on a summer day

今はまだ 今はまだ さよならなんて ima wa mada ima wa mada sayonara nante I’m not ready yet, I’m not ready yet
言わないよ 言えないよ 微笑みを見るまで iwanai yo ienai yo hohoemi o miru made I won’t say goodbye, I can’t say goodbye, until I see your smile
すきなこと すきなこと できたらいいけど。 suki na koto suki na koto dekitara ii kedo. I wish I could’ve done what I wanted to do, what I wanted to do.
「苦しいよ」って言いたいけれど "kurushii you" tte iitai keredo I wanted to say “It hurts,” but
うつむく君を遠くで眺めるだけでした、だけでした utsumuku kimi o tooku de nagameru dake deshita, dake deshita I could only, I could only watch you from afar as you hung your head

夏が終わる前に 伝えたいこと natsu ga owaru mae ni tsutaetai koto I want to tell you something before summer ends

「また今度」じゃなくてその前に "mata kondo" ja nakute sono mae ni You say “See you next time”–but I don’t want to wait that long
もっと近くで 話したいことがあってさ、 motto chikaku de hanashitai koto ga atte sa, I want to get to know you better before that, but,[2]

Translation Notes

  1. You may notice that the line literally uses the loan word “cider,” but to translate it that way would be misleading–in Japanese it can mean the apple-based beverage, but more often (and especially in this summery context) refers to the kind of nominally citrus-flavored soda that Americans would call Sprite and Brits lemonade.
  2. Yes, it really does end on an unfinished sentence with a comma at the end.
