Translation Notes[]
- ↑ 三十六計逃げるに如かず is an expression meaning, according to the dictionary, "the smartest thing in a tight situation is to beat a retreat," though it's often localized using the English expression "discretion is the better part of valor." If I'm interpreting it correctly, the proverb literally means "The Thirty-Six Stratagems don't measure up to running away."
- ↑ 縦に literally means "vertically," though I suspect it's being used here in a sense that means "top to bottom," "front to back," "cover to cover," etc.
- ↑ The word used here is 先輩, "senpai," which is how you address an upperclassman or a senior coworker or the like. In the next line, this is followed up with 年配 (nenpai), "elderly." I tried to preserve the nature of this pun in the translation as best I could.
- ↑ This doesn't really carry over into English; the spoken word is actually the same, but the boy is claiming that the kanji is wrong. Initially, he says 捜す, and he later amends that to 探す. There is a difference between the two terms; 捜す, the initial kanji, is most often used as in to look for something that's been lost (i.e. a wallet, a fugitive, a missing person), while 探す is used as in to seek out something desired (i.e. a job, buried treasure, a new house).
- ↑ I'm not really sure what 四捨五入 refers to in the context of this sentence, but it means "rounding" as in rounding numbers, usually rounding up, as far as I can tell.
- ↑ The word 以心伝心 is a four character compound meaning "telepathy," "mind-to-mind communication," "hearts speaking without words," etc. The phrase two lines later, 同心壊心, doesn't look like it's a set expression, though the kanji mean "same minds destroy minds," so I think the idea here is that like minds will destroy each other.
- ↑ This translation is tricky because the two nouns are most often used as adjectives. 気楽な is "carefree," "comfortable," or "easygoing," so the noun form of this would be closer to "easygoingness." 不吉な is "ominous," "sinister," or "unlucky," so the noun form of that would be closer to "inauspiciousness." Therefore, a clunkier but perhaps more loyal translation of this line would be "Inauspiciousness resides right beside easygoingness."
- ↑ The kanji for "go" used here is specifically the spelling meant to signify death or passing away, 逝く.
