Translation Notes

This entire song is a reference to one of the most well-known Chinese classics Journey to the West, which details the journey of the Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang on his journey to India (the "west") in order to obtain the Buddhist sutras, on the orders of Gautama Buddha. Three immortals -- Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing -- accompany him as disciples on the journey as a way to atone for their previous wrongdoings and reach enlightenment.

  1. ↑ Refers to the series of eighty-one tribulations the group encounters before accomplishing their mission. Nine-nine represents an "End" -- after this number everything returns to one, representing a cycle -- and nine-nine also stands for nine times nine in Chinese.
  2. ↑ Chapter 13. The first mishap that Tang Sanzang encounters on his journey westward. The tiger and the bear refers to the demons General Yin and Bear Mountain Lord who consume his original disciples before he encounters Sun Wukong.
  3. ↑ Referring to how Sun Wukong was imprisoned for five hundred years under a rock by Buddha for wreaking havoc in the Heavens, only to be released when he promised to follow Tang Sanzang as a disciple and bodyguard on the other's journey west.
  4. ↑ Chapter 15. A banished dragon prince consumes Tang Sanzang's horse. He later transforms into the monk's white horse for the remainder of the journey.
