Lyrics

Japanese Romaji English
「ねえ一緒なんじゃない?」 なんて信じられない "nee issho nan janai?" nante shinjirarenai “Hey, aren’t we kinda the same?” That's something I just can’t believe.
これは面倒くささと好奇心らの病みのバトル kore wa mendoukusasa to koukishinra no yami no batoru This is a battle of suffering from bothersomeness and curiosity.
“あなたのことが私は嫌い” "anata no koto ga watashi wa kirai" ‘I hate you’
言葉が痛いほど視界をエグる kotoba ga itai hodo shikai o eguru The words dig into[1] my field of vision so much that they hurt.

想定の範囲内 自由なんてもんはない soutei no han'i nai jiyuu nante mon wa nai There’s no such thing as freedom within the bounds of my hypothesis.
どうせ届かないから言わないだけ バカにしてさ douse todokanai kara iwanai dake baka ni shite sa It’s not like you’d ever understand, so I’ll just keep my mouth shut and make a fool of you.
秘密があれば私は無敵 himitsu ga areba watashi wa muteki As long as people have secrets to hide, I’m invincible.
流した涙でいい子になれるんだ nagashita namida de ii ko ni nareru nda I can be a good girl through the tears I shed.

死んじゃおっかこのまま なんてネガいも shinjao kka kono mama nante negai mo “Shall I just die"—even while making wishes[2] like this,
生きたくってついつい言ってみただけ ikitaku tte tsuitsui itte mita dake I accidentally said “I want to live.”
どうか「いいよ」なんて答えないで douka "ii yo" nante kotaenaide Please don’t respond with an “okay.”
まだ私じゃない mada watashi janai I’m still not myself.

苦しくって昨日を呪う強さ kurushiku tte kinou o norou tsuyosa When I talk about my painful strength that curses yesterday
嬉しくって明日をネガう弱さ ureshiku tte ashita o negau yowasa and my delightful weakness that longs for tomorrow,
「わかる」って言わないで わからないくせに "wakaru" tte iwanaide wakaranai kuse ni don’t say “I understand.” You don’t understand a thing.
ねえ、そうじゃない? nee, sou janai? Isn’t that right?

「ねえ一緒なんじゃない?」 なんて信じられない "nee issho nan janai?" nante shinjirarenai “Hey, aren’t we kinda the same?” That's something I just can’t believe.
どこが似ているのか違っているのか教えてほしい doko ga nite iru no ka chigatte iru no ka oshiete hoshii I want you to tell me where we’re similar and where we’re different.
見ないふりがやさしさだとしたら minai furi ga yasashisa da to shitara If turning a blind eye is an act of kindness,
私の居場所はどこにあるの watashi no ibasho wa doko ni aru no then where is the place that I belong?

冗談の進化論 それは便利なんだろう joudan no shinkaron sore wa benri nan darou A joke evolutionary theory, well, isn’t that convenient?
雨後晴の血 この命巻き戻し amenochi harenochi kono inochi makimodoshi Rewinding this life after the sun[3] after the rain.
正しさだけで殴り合うならば tadashisa dake de naguriau naraba If we’re simply fighting over what’s right,
勝ち目はないんだよ 特別などないや kachime wa nai nda yo tokubetsu nado nai ya then there’s no chance of winning. I’m not anything special.

死んじゃおって そもそも生きているのか shinjao tte somosomo ikite iru no ka I say “I’ll just die,” but am I really even alive in the first place?
嫌になって誰かを悪にしても iya ni natte dareka o aku ni shite mo Even if you get fed up with someone and start treating them poorly,
なにも変わらないから “変わりたい”だけは nani mo kawaranai kara "kawaritai" dake wa since nothing will change, 'I want to change’ is the only wish
叶えたい kanaetai I want granted.

「それだけ?」って私を笑うくせに "sore dake?" tte watashi o warau kuse ni “Is that all?” you said, laughing at me,
あなただって足りてないとこだらけ anata datte taritenai toko darake but even you have a ton of weak points.
“やめて”って言えたらな 溢れちゃう前に "yamete" tte ietara na afurechau mae ni If only I could say 'stop it’ before it overflows.
ねえ、そうじゃない? nee, sou janai? Isn’t that right?

死んじゃおっかこのまま なんてネガいも shinjao kka kono mama nante negai mo “Shall I just die"—even while making wishes like this,
生きたくってついつい言ってみただけ ikitaku tte tsuitsui itte mita dake I accidentally said “I want to live.”
どうか「いいよ」なんて答えないで douka "ii yo" nante kotaenaide Please don’t respond with an “okay.”
まだ私じゃない mada watashi janai I’m still not myself.

生きたいってネガえばネガうほどに ikitai tte negaeba negau hodo ni The more I wish "I want to live,"
死にたいって思うこと許してね shinitai tte omou koto yurushite ne the more I want you to forgive me for thinking “I want to die.”
いつか私になる “愛したい”になる itsuka watashi ni naru "aishitai" ni naru Someday, I’ll become myself. I’ll start 'wanting to love.'[4]
ねえ、そうじゃない? nee, sou janai? Isn’t that right?
これは妄想じゃない kore wa mousou janai This is not a delusion.[5]

English translation by Violet

Translation Notes

  1. Words that are spelled in katakana stylistically are bolded. バトル and バカ are not bolded as the former is a loanword and the latter is sometimes written in this way in general. The words that are bolded include エグる, ネガい and ネガう– only the roots of the words are in katakana, however, and I tried to convey that by bolding most but not all of the translated words.
  2. ネガい and later ネガう, usually written 願う or 願い, are possibly spelled this way to reference the “ネガティブ” in the title.
  3. The kanji here reads “雨後晴の血” instead of “雨後晴後,“ the latter being the spoken meaning and what makes contextual sense in the song. The translation of the written lyrics in this line would be something like “Clear weather blood rewinding this life after the rain." It might also be interpreted as "Rewinding this life after the storms of life (the rain) have wounded me (clear weather blood)."
  4. As one YouTube commenter pointed out on the official upload, the phrase “’愛したい’になる could also be interpreted as “’I 死体’になる.” While this reads the exact same way, the meaning of the line changes to “(Someday) I will become a corpse.”
  5. I can’t help but wonder if this last line could also be interpreted as “これはもう、そうじゃない“ which would mean “this is no longer the case” and seems to reference the recurring line “ ねえ、そうじゃない?” “Isn’t that right?”
