Japanese Romaji English
戦い疲れた兵士が静かに腰掛け tatakai tsukareta heishi ga shizuka ni koshikake This is where soldiers tired of fighting take a seat
休んで消える場所 yasunde kieru basho then rest and vanish.
雲が降りてきて さあ霧隠れ kumo ga orite kite saa kirigakure The clouds have descended. All is hidden in fog.
ほら月夜がめくれて二億年 hora tsukiyo ga mekurete niokunen Look—the moonlit nights have been peeled off across two hundred million years…[1]

おいで追われた野うさぎよ oide owareta no usagi yo Come, o rabbit that was pursued!
さあ一度はおいでや星の宿 saa ichido wa oide ya hoshi no yado Come at least once to the Star Inn.
入り口はそこの(かど)降りてすぐ iriguchi wa soko no kado orite sugu The entrance is just down the corner.

月から温泉 湧いているから だから tsuki kara onsen waite iru kara dakara A hot spring is gushing from the moon,
帰れぬとこまで降りといで kaerenu toko made oritoide So descend until you can’t go back.

ここは万物霊長夢見る旅籠屋 koko wa banbutsu reichou yume miru hatagoya This is the inn dreamed of by all creation and humanity.
ようこそおこしや黄泉の宿 youkoso okoshiya yomi no yado Welcome—come to Hell’s Inn.[2]
産着を着せましょ丑の刻 ubugi o kisemasho ushi no koku Let’s wear a newborn’s clothes at 2am.
あったかくてやさしくて attakakute yasashikute So warm, so tender…

ああ 悲しい生き物集まるよ aa kanashii ikimono atsumaru yo Ah… Sad beings are all gathering.
ほら極楽天国首枕 hora gokuraku tengoku kubi makura Look—Here’s the neck pillow of Paradise and Heaven.
南の花園咲かせてさ minami no hanazono sakasete sa I’m making the southern flower garden bloom.
さあ 涙の雨露 きれいに飾ります saa namida no amatsuyu kirei ni kazarimasu Now, I’ll adorn it with rain and dew formed from tears.

千人くわえて黄泉の穴 sen'nin kuwaete yomi no ana Hell’s hole holds a thousand people.
一万人飲み込み黄泉の国 ichiman'nin nomikomi yomi no kuni The realm of the dead swallows up ten thousand people.
ほら静かだね でも悲しいね hora shizuka da ne demo kanashii ne See how quiet it is? Still, it’s sorrowful
でもあんまり苦しくないんだね demo anmari kurushikunai nda ne but it’s not that painful.

心にぽっかり風の穴 kokoro ni pokkari kaze no ana An air hole gapes in my heart.
寝て 覚めても南の旅人が nete samete mo minami no tabibito ga Whether asleep or awake, the southern travelers
ご神木くり抜いた笛吹くよ goshinboku kurinuita fuefuku yo blow flutes made from pulled-out sacred trees.
いつまでも響いてやまないよ itsumade mo hibiite yamanai yo They will play their music forever more.

内緒のお宝地図の道 naisho no otakara chizu no michi This is the path laid out in the secret treasure map.
あなただけに聞かせる夢の宿 anata dake ni kikaseru yume no yado I’ll tell only you about the Dream Inn.
夢フワフワゆめゆめ疑わぬ yume fuwafuwa yume yume utagawanu Buoyant in a dream, you do not doubt even a little.
一眠りでぐっすり二億年 hitonemuri de gussuri niokunen You lay sound asleep for two hundred million years…

ここは万物霊長夢見る旅籠屋 koko wa banbutsu reichou yume miru hatagoya This is the inn dreamed of by all creation and humanity.
ようこそおこしや黄泉の宿 youkoso okoshiya yomi no yado Welcome—come to Hell’s Inn.
たぶん近くに 来たかもしれない tabun chikaku ni kita kamo shirenai You’ve probably arrived nearby.
寂しいけど苦しくない そこは sabishii kedo kurushikunai soko wa It’s a lonely place, but not so painful.

悲しい生き物集まるよ kanashii ikimono atsumaru yo Ah… Sad beings are all gathering.
ほら極楽天国首枕 hora gokuraku tengoku kubi makura Look—Here’s the neck pillow of Paradise and Heaven.
これお涙頂戴招待状 kore onamida choudai shoutaijou A written invitation requests tears.
いつでも届ける準備はできてます itsudemo todokeru junbi wa dekitemasu I can deliver it at any time. I’m prepared.

Translation Notes

  1. 月夜がめくれて gives me a really weird mental image. I was looking at some examples of ‘が めくれて’, and they were mostly linked to things sticking up (like a collar). I went a bit further and got ‘peeled off’ – but something like ‘flicking through (e.g. the pages of a book)’ could be more appropriate.
  2. The word used for hell here (黄泉 – yomi) is neither paradise or firey hell – it’s just a place where you carry out a kind of gloomy existence as a spirit forever. That’s a massive oversimplification, so please visit this resource if you’d like to learn more about the different Japanese hells.
