Lyrics

Japanese | Romaji | English |
贋作は血を滲ませ真作へ | gansaku wa chi wo nijimase shinsaku e | The fake, after all the strenuous efforts, will be authentic. |
壇上 判然と語らう先輩の顔を見つめて | danjou hanzen to katarau senpai no kao o mitsumete | Watching the face of you, senpai, who’s talking so clearly, |
凡庸でしかないわたしはこの上なく焦がれた | bon'you de shika nai watashi wa kono ue naku kogareta | I,[1] nothing but ordinary, fell in a most ardent love. |
長い髪を切り落としてゆく | nagai kami o kiriotoshite yuku | I’m cutting off my long hair. |
この性格も嘘で固めてく | kono seikaku mo uso de katameteku | I solidify even my personality with lies |
あなたのようになりたくて | anata no you ni naritakute | So that I can become like you. |
嗚呼 減らしていく 削り 刮ぐ | aa herashite iku kezuri kosogu | Alas, I’m diminishing myself! I scrape and slice myself off. |
わたしは路傍の石だから | watashi wa robou no ishi dakara | Since I am a mere pebble, |
輝くためにはわたしを型に嵌めて | kagayaku tame ni wa watashi o kata ni hamete | In order to shine, by squeezing myself into a pattern, |
気取らないと 演じないと | kedoranai to enjinai to | I have to put on airs. I have to play a role. |
先輩みたいにならないと | senpai mitai ni naranai to | I have to be like you, senpai, |
無価値なこと 誰よりわかってるからね | mukachi na koto dare yori wakatteru kara ne | Because I know more than anyone else that I’m worthless. |
卒業してあなたは去った 私は在り続けた | sotsugyou shite anata wa satta watashi wa ari tsuzuketa | You graduated and departed, while I remained here. |
人からも慕われ始め 憧れになっていた | hito kara mo shitaware hajime akogare ni natte ita | People started to look up to me, and I became their idol. |
それがとても心嬉しくて | sore ga totemo kokoro ureshikute | That was really happy; |
夢に少し届いた気がして | yume ni sukoshi todoita ki ga shite | I felt that I got a little closer to my dream— |
あなたに近づけたかな? | anata ni chikazuketa kana? | Did I come near to you? |
嗚呼 粧していく まやかしてく | aa mekashite iku mayakashiteku | Alas, I’m making myself up. I’m deceiving you. |
あなたを着込んで幕開く | anata o kikonde maku hiraku | I’m clad in you, and the curtain opens, |
それしかわたしに価値などないのだから | sore shika watashi ni kachi nado nai no dakara | Because that is my one and only value. |
あの日焦がれ見たあなたの笑顔を素顔に貼り付ける | ano hi kogare mita anata no egao o sugao ni haritsukeru | I paste your smile, which I fell in love with that day, on my natural face— |
笑い方を忘れたこの素顔に そっと | waraikata o wasureta kono sugao ni sotto | Silently on my natural face which forgot how to smile. |
鏡の前で吐いて 涙浮かべて | kagami no mae de haite namida ukabete | I throw up in front of a mirror. I have tears in my eyes. |
嘔吐いて 吐いて 泣いて 理由もわからなくて | ezuite haite naite wake mo wakaranakute | I feel nauseous, throw up, and cry aloud, unable to find out why. |
私は憧れを得た代価に何を亡くしてしまったの? | watashi wa akogare o eta daika ni nani o nakushite shimatta no? | What did I end up losing in return for all the aspirations I’ve got? |
嗚呼 壊れていく 崩れていく | aa kowarete iku kuzurete iku | Alas, I’m breaking down. I’m falling apart. |
それすら上手く誤魔化していく | sore sura umaku gomakashiteku | And I’m even covering it up so skillfully. |
今更私はわたしになれないから | imasara watashi wa watashi ni narenai kara | I cannot go back to being myself now, after all. |
型が馴染む 遠のいてく | kata ga najimu toonoiteku | I’m fitting in this pattern. I’m growing farther. |
誰もがわたしを忘れていく | daremo ga watashi o wasurete iku | Everyone’s going to forget me. |
だけどこれで |
dakedo kore de anata ni nareta no nara iin da yo | But, if I could be “I” (you)[2] with this, that would be fine. |

Translation Notes
- ↑ It might be notable that the lyrics spell “watashi” (“I” in English) in two ways: わたし (in hiragana) and 私 (in kanji). Although I didn’t (actually couldn’t) express this difference in the translation, the hiragana わたし is more likely to refer to the natural, real “I”, while the kanji 私 seems to refer to the wrought, made-up “I”.
- ↑ 私 (watashi; I) is written while あなた (anata; you) is actually sung.
